A sundial measures time by the position of the sun. A shadow is cast on a flat surface marked with the hours of the day. As the position of the sun changes, the time indicated by the shadow changes. However, sundials can be designed for any surface where a fixed object casts a predictable shadow.
The top of the sundial is hinged and a curved scale is used to set your local latitude angle. The magnetic compass permits the sundial to be oriented North. During transport, the needle lift mechanism of the compass is engaged to protect the compass′s jeweled bearing. The sundial can be accurately leveled by three adjustable legs. The local time can be determined by looking at the sun′s shadow cast by the vane of the sundial.
For compact storage the top of the sundial can lay down flat, and both the latitude scale and the sundial vane are hinged to lay flat. The sundial measures 4 1/2 inches tall, 2 inches tall when collapsed, the body of the compass is 2 7/8 inches in diameter, and the sundial weighs 1 pound.
